Contractions are used to get your baby into the best position to give birth- so if we get baby into this position prior to labour our contractions will only have to work to dilate the cervix (open the vagina) and push baby out.

If you get your baby in the right position prior to birth with great posture and bodywork, it will result in a much faster and easier labour!

TRY THIS ACTIVITIY TO LEARN THE BEST WAY TO SIT IN PREGNANCY

Imagine you have a light that beams out of your belly button. The light should aim down or straight when resting. Avoid it pointing upwards where possible.

HOW TO SIT WHEN PREGNANT

  • Keep your back straight and pull your shoulders back.

  • The buttocks should reach the back of the chair (option to add pillow behind lower back).

.

  • Use a footstool and keep your feet raised. It will reduce the strain on the lower back. If you don’t have a footstool, your feet should be placed evenly on the floor. The knees and the hips should be at 90 degrees.

  • It is best not to cross your legs as it can affect blood circulation.

  • Slightly tilt your pelvis forward.

  • Replace your chair for a birth ball where possible.

HOW TO STAND WHEN PREGNANT

Stand on both feet evenly. Distribute weight between hips evenly. Do not “pop” your hip out as this causes tension and unbalance in the body. If you have a toddler, be mindful of swapping sides when carrying them on your hip.

HOW TO MOVE WHEN PREGNANT

Don’t just turn your waist. Instead, you should turn your whole body with your knees and ankles together (like a mermaid) when getting in and out of a chair or bed. This will protect your lower back, abs and your growing baby.

Be mindful of repetitive behaviours that unbalance the body. For example, do you always use the same arm to push yourself up from the floor to standing? If so, try and equally divide this habit between both sides of the body to promote balance in the body.
